Big Third Quarter Propels Galilean to Sixth-Straight Win

The Eagles traveled to Lexington, KY Tuesday night (November 27) for their first, true road test of the season to face Region 4 foe Trinity Christian.
The Titans were able to hit early and often to make the first quarter a tight contest with the tally after the first eight minutes at 19 a piece.
“I didn’t like our defense early,” said coach Scott Jones. “We let them get going with some miscommunication that led to open shots. The second quarter wasn’t much better, but we were able to push ahead a bit to give us some breathing room.”
Galilean worked up a five-point lead heading into the halftime break as four different Eagles scored in the quarter led by senior Lee Van Lew II’s 10 points.
“Lee played a big ballgame for us (Tuesday night),” Jones pointed out. “I really liked how our guys made sure to feed the hot hand. I have been pleased with the way this team is willing to let every guy get going. There hasn’t been really any selfish play. I am proud of that.”
Van Lew finished the game with his third-straight double double scoring a game-high 24 points to go with 10 rebounds.
A 21-13 third quarter difference extended the Galilean lead as, again, four different Eagles notched points. The big third period allowed GCA to put the game into cruise control in the fourth taking the contest with a final of 69-50.
“After we gave up 33 first-half points,” recalled Jones of his halftime adjustments in the locker room. “I really stressed the importance of improving our defensive effort and getting to work on the boards. We allowed to many second-chance opportunities and it really all came down to effort. I liked how we responded in the third quarter.”
The halftime message stuck. Three Eagles finished with double-digit rebounds. Along with Van Lew, Senior Caleb Lewis and freshman Aaron Brown each earned their own double doubles. Lewis scored 14 and grabbed 10 boards while Brown notched 10 points to go with his game-high 15 rebounds. Van Lew led Galilean with four assists.
Junior Caleb Burrows scored 15 points in limited minutes. Sophomore AJ Lightbourne put in four points and pulled down five rebounds as senior Anthony Royalty grabbed four boards and scored his lone bucket on a put back.
“We had a lot of guys do a lot of good things,” added Jones. “Each win so far has been on the back of team effort. We had six guys score (Tuesday night) and four in double figures. It feels good to get a region win, but now it’s on to the next one. We have some tough match ups coming up.”
The 69-50 win improves Galilean to a 6-0 start this season. There are three contests on the schedule for next week.
